An AS qualification is a discrete qualification and counts towards the points total. AS scores are exactly half of the full A level points score.

The second year of A level offers A2 specifications. There is also a synoptic paper, which requires students to show that they can handle the skills and knowledge of the subject in its entirety.

Please note: we do reserve the right not to run courses if there is insufficient interest.

AS + A2 = A level

Students make a preliminary choice of subject at interview during the second term of year 11, when GCSE predictions are available. The expectation is that 4 subjects will be studied to AS level and 3 subjects to the full A level. The majority of Universities expect students to offer three good A level grades.

Choices will depend upon a variety of factors:

  • Career interest;
  • Enthusiasm for a subject;
  • Ability to do well
  • Acceptability for the subject

Many of these will be discussed at home or when you come for interview, but it is important to make the right choices. There may well be subjects that you have not studied before, for which you have no previous assessment, for example Accounts or Psychology.

Making choices

Subjects will be discussed at the preliminary interview with the Head of Sixth Form. Interviews can take place at any time during Year 11 and until the time of the publication of results, choices can be changed.

Following the publication of GCSE results, there will be the opportunity for a final interview where choices are finalised.

Independent study

Moving up to Sixth form requires a change of approach to academic work. Whereas previously all lessons have been teacher led, the emphasis will now change to students taking much greater responsibility for their own learning. This means learning to use Private Study time for establishing good work patterns, managing work over longer periods of time and ensuring that preparation for future lessons has been done – including homework.

Private Study is done in the Study Area with a teacher supervising.
